INFORMATION : DIABETES STATISTICS
An American Health Epidemic

Diabetes is one of the most costly health problems in the United States with numbers growing exponentially. One third of whom do not even know they have the disease. This makes diagnosis and prevention key to lowering extremity health risks. Below are some important statistics on diabetes:

Daily foot examinations and prompt medical attention can prevent most foot emergencies and amputations.

20.8 million people in the United States, or 7 percent of the population, have diabetes.

About 2,200 people are diagnosed every day.

A diabetic dies every 3 minutes of every day.

In the past decade, diabetes cases have increased by 40%.

800,000 or more people will be diagnosed with diabetes this year alone.

Diabetes is the 4th leading cause of death in the U.S.

One in five diabetics who enter the hospital are there specifically for foot problems.

There were 87,000 amputations due to diabetes in the year 2000 and 92,000 in year 2003.

600,000 people had near misses - they almost suffered
a lower extremity amputation.

If a diabetic had a 'near miss' or amputation, they have a 50% chance of suffering the same threat or worse within the next five years.
